Free public philosophy talks
It all started when we were hanging out in San Francisco with a couple of friends who worked in tech marketing. Seth wondered, “Should technology be beautiful?” It’s a question that got people talking to each other and it sparked conversations across several cities culminating in a public lecture at Fort George brewery in Astoria, OR.
We hope every talk we give is the beginning of a longer conversation. So we start with questions that invite people to wonder. Are secrets necessary for our being? Where is the virtue in fashion? How do we know we’re not dreaming? How real is math? Are all titles of previous talks.
The philosophical dimensions of the talks are approachable without watering down ideas. And almost always the question gets even messier and more complex before offering a response. The topics are rooted in philosophical study, but you’re not going to hear Heideggar said this, Zhuangzi said that, or ontologically speaking you can’t phenomenalogical your way out of that existential eschatology. The speakers know their way around that language, but we want to welcome our community to do philosophy together not scare, or bore, or confuse people away.
There’s always a chance to ask questions after the talk and if you’re really into it, we also have a post talk get together.
Shout out to Fort George Brewery for over a decade of support!
