What is the self? What can we know? What is the world made of? What does it mean to live well, and what would it mean to be free?
This fall, Seth Tichenor is tracing the development of classical Indian philosophy, beginning with the Vedas and Upaniṣads and following the ideas, arguments, disagreements and philosophical schools that grew from them.
Along the way, the class will encounter radically different accounts of reality, knowledge, duty, liberation, matter, spirit and the sacred.
No previous philosophy background required.

What does good mean? Do our duties matter more than the consequences of our actions? What makes someone virtuous? Is ethics universal, or shaped by culture, religion and circumstance? And what does it mean to live well?
In Philosophical Ethics, Seth Tichenor takes up these questions one at a time, viewing very different thinkers and traditions next to eachother. Plato, Kant, Aristotle, Nietzsche, the Bhagavad Gītā, the Dhammapada, Hannah Arendt, Zhuangzi, Ibn Khaldun and others will be considered.
The goal is not to arrive at one final system of ethics, but to examine how different philosophical approaches change what we notice in the questions themselves.
No previous philosophy background required.
