Ethical traditions develop inside particular histories, languages, religions, institutions, and ways of life. Yet people continually encounter, interpret, admire, and criticize ethical traditions beyond their own.

Can ethical ideas be meaningfully compared across cultures without simply imposing one culture’s standards on another? What makes genuine cross-cultural philosophical inquiry possible?
