Wisdom in Conversation: Philosophy + Practice

  • The Catalyst 264 West Marine Drive Astoria, Oregon, 97103 United States (map)

What happens to religion and wisdom traditions in an AI world?

As artificial intelligence becomes more capable, more present, and more entangled with everyday life, it raises questions that reach far beyond technology. What happens to ideas of personhood, authority, revelation, ritual, meaning, consciousness, and the sacred? Do old traditions change when the world changes, or do they become more important precisely because it does?

Wisdom in Conversation: Philosophy & Practice brings together people with different relationships to faith, doubt, spiritual practice, secular thought, and wisdom traditions to explore those questions together. No one is being asked to represent or defend an entire tradition. The point is to see what becomes possible when people with genuinely different frameworks think seriously in the same room.

The evening is also an introduction to the kinds of conversations Philosofarian hosts at The Catalyst: big questions, multiple perspectives, no requirement that everyone arrive at the same conclusion.

And this is only one question.

What happens to prayer when machines can imitate conversation? Can AI participate in ritual? Does a nonhuman intelligence change what we mean by soul, wisdom, or moral responsibility? What should traditions preserve, and what should they reconsider?

There is a lot more to talk about.

Free. Space is limited, and RSVPs are encouraged.

After Grand Opening Week

This is one of many conversations Philosofarian hopes to host around belief, nonbelief, religion, wisdom traditions, meaning, and the questions that emerge from the experience of great mystery.
